Just south of Thermopolis is the Wind River Canyon, home to the Wind River Indian Reservation.  The river flows north, emptying into the Big Horn River just 4 miles south of Thermopolis.
The clear, blue river divides the Wind River Canyon Scenic Byway, better known as US Highway 20, and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad.
The narrow canyon is about 10 miles long with walls rising 2,500 feet above the river.
You can also see interesting spires along the canyon road.
Beautiful rock formations date back thousands of years.
Hot Springs State Park, Wyoming's first state park, is located at the edge of town.  In addition to a number of hot springs, it is also the home of the Wyoming state bison herd.  Roads loop through the pasture enabling visitors to get a close-up look at the herd.  This old boy is still in his molting stage.  Before long, he will be putting on a new coat for winter.
The size of the herd varies seasonally with newborn calves, the condition of the pasture, and sales to other historic herds.
