Ann's Journal
There is no easy way to get to Monument Valley from Kodachrome Basin so we backtracked via UT 12 to US 89 and headed south. This route took us into Arizona and back up into Utah. We went through Kanab and by the Vermillion Cliffs and, just after crossing into Arizona, we crossed Lake Powell.

Lake Powell is located within the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and is the second largest manmade reservoir in the U.S. Only Lake Mead, behind Hoover Dam, is larger. Both lakes are formed by the Colorado River.

From Page, AZ we took AZ 98 then U.S. 160 to Kayenta where we turned on U.S. 163 to Oljato and Goulding’s Monument Valley RV Park.

We really enjoyed our self-guided drive through the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park. It is the most visited tribal park in the Navajo Nation today. They are doing so well that they just built a beautiful new hotel and resort called "The View"

Because we love westerns, many of the buttes and mesas were familiar to us. We had skirted the valley several years ago but this time, we slowed down long enough to enjoy it. That’s what retirement is all about!

From here, we’re Colorado-bound for the rest of the summer.

For now, happy trails to you . . . til we meet again!
